Thousands of acres of farmland were destroyed in and around 1917, to create the new, man-made Ashokan Reservoir that feeds into New York City. Eleven villages were forcibly evacuated and burned to the ground to make room for the 8,300-acre body of water — at the time, the world’s largest reservoir.
This painting is an homage to those whose worlds were torn apart. The new water would forever reflect their histories, dreams and secrets in the passing clouds above – the Catskills, a witness and holder of memories.
